Transformer failure analysis

Transformer Failure Analysis

All transformers will fail at some point. It isn't a matter of "if" but "when". Transformer failures can be expensive but replacement or repair costs are usually small compared to the cost of downtime.

Is it important to know why your transformer failed? Absolutely. Through inspection and analysis of a failed transformer, we may be able to determine a cause of failure which could help you prevent them in the future. Some of the causes of failure we have been able to determine are surge/lightning, internal short-circuit, external short-circuit, overloading, manufacturer design defects, and improper grounding.

Each failure analysis report includes transformer data, observations and summary, and photographs. Because we do not have a complete "picture" of the system and the details surrounding the failure, we may not be able to identify a cause with 100 percent certainty.
